Wireless Mesh CCTV Technology allows an already effective SafeCity program to gain further momentum in the fight against crime.

Issue: Expansion of SafeCity program
Authority: City of Melbourne Council
Solution: Implementation of a proven wireless solution
Result: Seamless transition to new technology without compromising security

In 1997, Melbourne City Council introduced its SafeCity program based on a fibre optic network of CCTV cameras. A decade later, an opportunity to utilise new technology was identified, with the potential to increase the program’s effectiveness.

When the original system was launched, the location of cameras was limited to locations where existing infrastructure allowed the cabling to be installed.

In 2009, Council turned to SNP Security to assist in the expansion of their CCTV system. Our solution was to link the existing fibre optic path with wireless mesh technology to expand the number of viable locations for surveillance.

The wireless mesh solution required detailed planning and involved several third party groups including Yarra Trams, CitiPower, Victoria Police and VicRoads. SNP dealt with each of these organisations ensuring our system design and layout fitted within their guidelines and responsibilities.

The upgrade involved the installation of 34 cameras, of which 19 are on a wireless network. As a result, a total of 54 surveillance cameras are now installed in the city, monitoring areas where anti-social behaviour or criminal activity are more likely to occur.

Our electronic security team successfully kept the two systems running side by side during commissioning, ensuring no loss of footage and a seamless transition to the new technology.

The SafeCity program continues to operate successfully. A research study undertaken by Council showed that the cameras were a key crime fighting tool that enhanced the effective policing of Melbourne’s streets and had a significant impact in helping to reduce crime in the CBD.
